You'll notice several alien languages on the various planets of SWTOR. Most of this text is something you can read with a little practice. The game is more interesting once you can read the signs. Not only is it helpful for finding your way around, it also lets you be "in" on a number of jokes.
The most common alphabet in Star Wars is called Aurebesh, sometimes mistakenly called Aurekbesh as aurek and besh are the first two letters. If you are only going to learn one alphabet, choose this one. It will allow you to read most of the text in the Star Wars game and movies.
Another popular alphabet is called Galactic Basic. This alphabet is much more common on Corellia and Nar Shaddaa. Upper case letters are simply lower case letters flipped upside down (or horizontally if a vertical flip doesn't change it). It can be tricky to learn both alphabets as they have symbols in common.
Be aware that some signs around the game are written in gibberish. Most of the housing decorations, large signs and posters are well-written.
